Thread: jeep cherokee, cranks but won't start. Join Date Aug Posts 2. I've got a Jeep Cherokee Country 4. Recently my ladyfriend was driving it home from work and it died on the freeway. Towed it to my place, and tried to start it up. It cranks, but won't start. I've ruled out the fuel pump, as I can hear it engage when I turn the key to the accessory position. Also, fuel squirts out when I push the schrader valve near the engine.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Posts 2, Re: jeep cherokee, cranks but won't start With any no startyou'll want to verify fuel and spark.Angular 4 settimeout example
You've already found pressure at the rail but we need to know if the injectors are firing.I gavec jeep wrangler with 2.
While driving it sputtered backfired and quit running. Have checked for spark changed coul. Checked for fuel getting fuel. Checked timing by aligning tdc and looking at position of rotor under distributor. Correct alignment according to Haynes manual. Have not checked compression. Just will not start. What else could be wron? Ok you say you have fuel but what is the pressure at rails should be about 38 pounds, did you ohm out the injectors they should be anywhere from Which jeeps with high miles the chain could stretch and jump a tooth.
The compression should be about to Dwinnings answered 3 years ago. Sorry it's been a,while now since my first question. So it is a throttle body and you can see the fuel pulse when cranked.
Still haven't checked compression. I thought about the timing jumping a cog. But no way to adjust time since it is computer controled. When it stop running it really spit and sputtered and backfired then nothing. I changed the coil because the spark I was getting g looked a little orange. You're late for work, your jeep won't start, and now you're stressed out big time.
In this instance it can be hard to think of all the troubleshooting steps you can do to get your Jeep going again. Fortunately, due its spacious engine compartment, the troubleshooting steps for a nonstarting jeep are easy to perform.
Place your key into the ignition and turn the key as though you are trying to start your jeep. Examine the battery for corrosion, which looks like white crust on the battery terminals.
Scrape off any corrosion with your screwdriver. Use caution when working with the battery. Acid from the battery can harm clothing and skin. Tighten any cables that feel loose or are disconnected by pressing them into the connecting slot. Try your headlights again. If they still do not work, try jump-starting the battery.
Connect the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive cell of the charged car battery. Connect one end of the negative black jumper cable to the negative post it will have a "-" on it of the charged car battery.
Connect the other end of the negative jumper cable black to a solid, non-paint-coated metal part of the engine of the dead jeep.
How to Troubleshoot a Jeep That Won't Start
Start your jeep and let it run for 5 minutes. If the problem is a dead battery, then this will charge it. Do not start the car that has the live battery. Disconnect all cables in the opposite order that you connected them. Do not let the cables touch one another or you could cause a short in the electrical systems of either car. If jump-starting the battery does not work, then check the starter.
Follow the positive red cable from the battery all the way to the starter. The starter is shaped like a soda can but is larger than one. Place the metal part of your screwdriver across the two poles so that you form an electrical connection. Be sure to touch only the handle of the screwdriver. Listen for the sound of the starter. If you hear it running, than your starter is fine. If it does not run, then you may need to replace it. You do not need to start your jeep at this point.
Check all of the connections from the starter to the battery, as well as the connections from the starter to the rest of the engine. Tighten any loose wires and replace any severed ones by pressing them firmly into the correct slots. If the starter works but your jeep is still not running, you'll need to test the alternator.
You will need to bring your vehicle to an auto parts dealer for an alternator test. Fortunately, if the problem is the alternator, you will probably be able to jump-start the jeep and get enough power to start it once. Knowing that the cause of the problem lies in these 3 specific areas will help you figure out what tests you need to perform to find the faulty component and thus solve the problem. In this tutorial, which is a primer on what can cause a cranks but does not start conditionI'll share some insights and tips, based from my actual experience, that will help you narrow down your troubleshooting efforts. Before I jump into the specifics of what causes a no start condition, I want to clarify the difference between two common terms you'll see and hear as you diagnose the problem on your 4.
Cranks But Does Not Start Condition: In this type of condition, you turn the key and the engine in your Jeep cranks turns over but it doesn't start run. The usual suspects, that can cause this type of problem, are a bad fuel pump, bad crank sensor, bad ignition coil if your Jeep is distributor equippedetc.
Does Not Crank Condition: Means that the engine is not cranking when you turn the key to crank the engine. In other words, the engine doesn't turn over at all. This is usually due to a bad starter motor, bad ignition switch, bad neutral safety switch, or the engine is locked up. If your 4. As I mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial, a no start condition is caused by a lack of one of 3 basic things.
These three things are:. When your 4.Sorority rejection letter
It's as simple as this! I know, I know, I may be over-simplifying it all but knowing that only one of three things is missing really helps to put the problem into perspective! Also, knowing this means that when your Jeep doesn't want to start More specifically, this means that troubleshooting the problem requires that you check and confirm that:. OK, the list of possible things that can go wrong looks pretty long but it is rare to see or have two different components go bad from two separate systems at the same time.
The cool thing is, is that there is a diagnostic strategy that you can use to figure out exactly what's wrong with your particular no-start problem. Let's find out more about it in the next subheading. Then we met.

Do NOT follow this link or you will be banned from the site!Jeep started fine yesterday with no hesitation. From here it would crank and crank with no start. Another potential issue is: the previous owner installed a starter button. Any ideas? You need to narrow down the possible causes. Check for spark. And the push button starter is a troubling sign that the previous owner may have done some serious hacking on the wiring.
It is relatively inexpensive and easily replaced. But you might look at that boot legged starter wiring for current source and fusing issues.
I think the crank angle sensors were a big failure item on these cars. If there is no spark the problem could be with the coil or the ignition module located below the coil. This is what I know after checking some of the things suggested: I can hear the fuel pump when the key is turned.
I can hear the relay clicking under the hood. The Jeep began to start after repeated turning and even stayed on for a few seconds before petering out again. Question: Is it possible that the fuel pump could be bad even if I can hear it? Cougar July 6,am 3. Tester July 6,am 4.My 96 jeep was running great the day before. I went to start it the next day and it just cranked.
I thought it might be a fuel pump or fuel filter so i sprayed starting fluid down the air intake but nothing.Near vision test chart
So I ruled them out. Next i pulled a plug to see if i was getting a spark. I was not. I replaced the plugs they were due anyway and the ignition coil but it still won't start. Wires are original and on tight Anybody know what it might be? Nick answered 5 years ago. GuruSLH7L answered 10 months ago. Cranks with spark and fuel but won't start?
I through in one from Autozone. Didnt work. Rewired the wire harness. DIdnt work. Bought an OEM sensor and hooked up the old harness, fired right up. I thought it might be a fuel pump or fuel filter so i sprayed starting fluid down the air intake but not I have a Jeep Cherokee Sport and it won't crank. The starter works but the engine won't turn over.
Have checked Just bought a Jeep Cherokee Sport as a winter vehicle and to plow. Ran great for a day and drove to work. Went to start it to leave, it took a couple times but started.
Let it warm up, came Was driving and the Jeep just stopped. Put in a new fuel pump, not the problem. Although we can't hear the fuel pump when key is turned on.

When cranking I don't have any spark and the ASD relay doesn't seem to click.
I bought it used in working condition and it started fine until it start showing this problem, I asked the dealer if there was an antitheft device but, according to the VIN there is none installed at least at the factory, however it does have powerlocks. Any suggestion?
Do you. If it had anti-theft, it would run for a few seconds until the fuel pressure bled down. The place to start is by checking for stored diagnostic fault codes. You can do that by cycling the ignition switch three times from "off" to "run" within five seconds without cranking the engine, then the codes will be displayed on the odometer.
If there are no codes, you'll need a scanner that can display live sensor data. Look at the cam and crank sensors to see if "present" or "no" is displayed. If both are displayed as "no", it's possible no code will be set in memory because the Engine Computer looks for a signal from one when it sees the signal from the other one. If both signals are missing, the computer doesn't perform those self-tests. If both signals are missing, you'll have to check the common 5, 8, or 10 volt feed wire and the common ground wire.
You're a few steps ahead of most people with your dandy observations of the ASD relay. Was this answer. Hi, thanks for your prompt replay. I checked the codes and got 12 and 55, which doesn't say anything, I tried with a scanner OTC Mindreader but it could not comunicate with the vehicle.
I will checked the wire as you mentioned, I was wondering if the ignition switch coul be responsible for that? Lou Was this answer. Burned contacts in the ignition switch typically affect the circuit feeding the power windows, heater fan, and radio.
The contacts for the engine circuit handle very little current.Airbrush thinner
Passing the large current is the job of the ASD relay. Code 12 means the battery was disconnected within the last 50 starts. If it was not, look for an intermittent electrical connection that would make the Engine Computer think it was.
Code 55 just means "end of message". If no other codes come back, you'll have to use a scanner to view live data to see what's going on. The Chrysler DRB3 scanner has a "no-start" menu that shows all of the pertinent information on one screen.Sedia croce imbottita
Normally when the ASD relay doesn't turn back on during cranking, the problem is related to the cam or crank sensors, the common feed and ground wires, or a timing chain or belt problem. Hi, I will checked the wires related to the crank and cam sensors, and see if I there is any problem.
